I’m a music teacher at a high-poverty inner city elementary school in Tennessee.  Every day I see the tremendous power that poverty has to rob people of hope.  I also see the tenacity, resilience and creativity of people who HAVE hope to rise above their circumstances.  Imagine swimming with the current in a river of drab gray fish, and every few minutes a couple of brightly colored fish swim by in the opposite direction.  That’s what it seems like some days.  When kids have hope, they can make it.

My 7 year old son loves this video game where everything is black and white and you have a bucket with color in it – and you just have to splash everything up.  And when you do it doesn’t become the color in your bucket, it becomes whatever color it was supposed to be.  That’s what I feel like most days.  I just want to splash everything up with hope – and help it to look like it was designed to look.

Last year at my school, a 5th grade student who was being bullied brought a knife to school and cut the bully in the face.  Needless to say, this did not solve his problem.  A friend and I wrote a very catch song to address bullying – and to give students HOPE that there are solutions to their problems.  Check out these super talented kids singing the song:
